year 12 Homework

By Wednesday 19th November you need to research at least 4 film production companies. look at page 37 of your booklet for examples. You need to explain the connotation of the logo and then look at the types of film they produce and distribute.

Look at this example...

Paramount's eye catching logo shows the audience a scenic view of the top of some large mountains this according to the industry represents the 'Majestic Mountain' which evolved from a sketch, the Ben Lomond Mountain in Utah is thought to be the inspiration, this for start connotes that Paramount is a large, powerful company, the way that the word 'Paramount' is on the tip of the highest mountain suggests they are the 'top' in the business. The vast amount of starts shaped in a circle connotes their quality as a company and how they are well rounded brand. The scenic background suggest that the films produced and distributed by Paramount are very detailed and of high quality. The colours of the logo are also very majestic and earthly, connoting the natural view from the brand and suggesting they focus on the smallest details within their films.

Francis Lawrence was born on March 26, 1971 in Vienna, Austria. He is a producer and director, known for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013), I Am Legend (2007) and Constantine (2005).

Since Lions Gate had director Francis Lawrence film the two Mockingjay films back-to-back, the mini-studio is clearly confident that the stellar box-office performance of the first two films will continue. However, could Mockingjay Part 1 top Lions Gate's own expectations and become the highest-grossing film of 2014?

The business of The Hunger GamesThe first Hunger Games film grossed $691 million on a budget of $78 million. The second film, Catching Fire, grossed $865 million on a budget of $130 million. This means that gross ticket sales rose 25% between the first two films.
By comparison, the global box office of Lions Gate/Summit Entertainment's Twilight series surged 81% from $393 million to $710 million between the first two films. Therefore, it's not unreasonable to assume that Lions Gate could experience another 25% bump between Catching Fire and Mockingjay Part 1, which would help the latter's global box office hit $1.08 billion. That would be enough to edge out Viacom (NASDAQ: VIA  ) /Paramount's Transformers: Age of Extinction, the top film of 2014, which has grossed $968 million worldwide.
More important, the combined budget of the two Mockingjay films, at $250 million, is only moderately higher than Age of Extinction, which had a budget of $210 million. If Part 2 is as successful as Part 1, we could easily see the two Mockingjay films grossing more than $2 billion on a $250 million budget. By comparison, Disney's The Avengers grossed $1.5 billion on a budget of $220 million.

Year 12 exam film research

Did you see the trailer for The Hunger Games in the adverts during the X factor this evening? That would have cost a lot of money. Remember your homework is to look at how the Hunger Games is marketed. Where are the posters? What's on the posters? Where do you see the trailers and other promotional materials? Are there any TV spots or competitions? The information I presented in the lesson last week is in shared topics so you can access it.

This is preparation for your exam. You do not have to put in on your blog but you need to keep a record of what find so you can revise it and I can check you have done it!

I want to see this research by Friday 7th November.

Year 12 Film Homework

Week beginning 29th September
On your blog write up what you have learnt about making a film. Include making a risk assessment , choosing and organising actors and settings, using a camera and tripod, getting good shots, using camera movements, time management and budgets (!)

If you took photos of yourselves doing the filming you could use these. This is a very good habit to get into. Using your phones is fairly easy or there is a still camera setting on the video cameras.

Over the next few weeks you need to do some research on teen angst films. The aim is that you understand what these films are about and the conventions (ingredients) that they use to target their audience. THIS IS COURSEWORK

Each of these is due to be on your blog by the Friday at 3.10pm

Week beginning 6th October
Watch at least 1 teen-angst film and write a summary of what happens.
What is in the film that attracts a teenage audience?

Week beginning 13th October
Watch at least one other teen angst film and make notes on: the characters
  • the main settings
  • narratives and how they intertwine
  • mise en scene especially lighting, camera shots, actors, costumes, make up, props and iconography (props that link to a genre or type of film)
The easiest way will be to annotate photos from the film.

Week beginning 20th October
.Do the same for at least one other teen angst film. Try to find a British made one.
